Lady Gaga’s Burqa, and why I’m right about it

So many who are upset about Gaga’s burqa write of context, yet miss the most important context of all - that of gender inequality in Muslim countries. The burqa is the ultimate symbol of female suppression and inequality. The BRIGHT PINK and TRANSPARENT burqa is indeed reappropriating the symbol, but for a pro-feminist social context. Its gaudy bright pink color is to symbolize BLATANT femininity, as opposed to the typically black burqas, that hide women and their bodies as if they are black holes, devoid of substance or individuality, not to be noticed, hidden from the eyes of others. And the transparency shows the woman BEHIND the burqa, refusing to be hidden. The color and transparency are VITAL to the success of this outfit as social critique, yet they are details that most of these gripers are missing. And please, don’t even try to tell me that critiquing gender inequality in Muslim countries is “culturally insensitive.” Human rights have NOTHING to do with cultural sensitivity. Human rights are UNIVERSAL, and all human beings deserve to be treated equally, regardless of the culture that a particular human comes from.

Let me tell you something about the Muslim women, muslim countries, and the burqa. Here is a helpful list of Muslim women who were leaders through the times who were veiled, and not veiled, in Very Muslim Countries. You will note those who are Prime Ministers and acting Prime Ministers. I don’t see a female Vice President in America, let alone a President. Please be kind enough to inform Lady GaGa about this Very Important Issue (and please note the nuns, too. They live in such plight!).

Please let me tell you something about the Burqa. Though popularized in media in black color, burqas come in variety of shapes, styles, colors, embroideries, what have you. My best friend has a pink burqa, btw. Her mother was kind enough to sew it for her in Afghanistan. But no matter, let’s talk about the Black Burqa. The color black symbolizes power. You will note that when powerful men wear their suits, they are almost always black, or in very dark colors. In regards to hiding the full body, the burqa is a direct fight against popular media and its war on women and sexist message. Note that the Burqa, standing in contrast to bikinis, is very helpful in fighting body image issues, and eating disorders that come with it. As such, it also helps bolster self esteem. Burqa, while shrouding the female body, also gives her a say in who has access to it, or who doesn’t. Again, it is very feminist thought provoking piece of cloth, and is often used in political circles by Muslim women. The Burqa, while hiding the women, directly confronts the gazer to engage her mind and personality, not reduce her to a body and curves and a sex objecct. It forces one to consider the person behind the gender. NOT THAT YOU, OR GAGA WOULD KNOW ABOUT IT, COS OHMYGOD OPPRESSED MUSLIM WOMEN!

Bolded for badassery.

^^Yessss, perfectly said.

(Although, I doubt Gaga thinks along the lines of OHMYGOD OPRESSED MUSLIM WOMEN… I think she was just trying to be ~different~ …don’t put words in her mouth, please, just because some ignorant fool tried to stand up for her)
